I couldn’t resist…
1) How many times have you played DA:O? (“A whole fucking lot” is a valid answer here, if counting becomes difficult.)
Full playthroughs … “a whole fucking lot” is probably my only real answer. Though I think it comes up around 23? When you add in abandoned playthroughs, it shoots up through the roof.
2) What is your favorite Origin to play?
Even tie between Mahariel and Surana.
3) Is there an Origin you haven’t yet played? Why not?
I’ve played all the Origins, but the ones I’ve never finished are Aeducan and Tabris. Not sure why.
4) Who is your “canon” Warden? Or your favorite of all the ones you’ve played?
Erm … I have a few ‘canon’ Wardens, up to and including Queen Cousland-Theirin. But my favourite is the one I play on Formspring: Lyna Mahariel, my sweet and slightly undersocialised (at least by shemlen and city-elf standards) Dalish elf. Her attempts to cling to her sense of self and general optimism as the ground repeatedly drops out from under her, metaphorically speaking, is always an interesting one for me.
5) Who is your favorite love interest?
I … have only ever really romanced Alistair. I keep meaning to romance Zevran, I DO! It’s just … turning Alistair down is like kicking a puppy.
6) Is there a love interest you haven’t yet played? Why not?
Well, Alistair’s the only one I’ve ever completed, but the only one that’s never even started, whether by ninjamance or other, is Morrigan. That would be because I have never played a male character.
7) Who is your favorite non-LI companion?
You mean one who never is and could never be a LI? Ffffffff okay, it’s got to be Wynne. I never really saw her as preachy; just a woman who is very used to teaching the young. Her backstory is interesting, and I love how she maintains a sense of humour.
8) Out of the main four quests (Redcliffe, Orzammar, Circle of Magi, Dalish elves), which one is your favorite?
I … actually really like Orzamarr. While the Deep Roads is … challenging (and I hate the trap-maze on the way to the Anvil of the Void), I like the look at the politics. Besides, you pick up a new companion whose only reason to go along with you is apparently, “You’re gonna let me KILL THINGS! WOO!” and I respect that.
9) Name three of your favorite male non-companion characters.
Sgt Kylon. Bodhann. And that shifty little bugger who gives you the Rogue quests.
10) Name three of your favorite female non-companion characters.
Shianni. Dagna. Ser Cauthrien.
11) What is your favorite class (warrior, rogue, mage) to play?
It’s a toss-up between Mage and dual-wield Rogue. In the balance, though, probably Mage - I’ve got the tactics down and Mana Clash is AWESOME.
12) Is there a class you haven’t played? Why not?
Warrior. It just strikes me as phenomenally dull. I did TRY, but it didn’t take.
13) What is your favorite class specialization? (Assassin? Champion? Spirit Healer? Et cetera …)
I really don’t pay much attention to the specialities in Origins - it’s a bit different in DA2, where I LOVE Assassin so much. I guess it’d be Duelist, if I had to choose; it’s the only one I use regularly. Though Spirit Healer is a bonus for a mage who doesn’t want to take Wynne everywhere.
14) What is your favorite team of companions to take along with you? Do you keep the same three people all the time, or do you prefer different people for different quests?
Alistair as tank, always. If I’m playing a mage, it’s then Leliana as archer (and lockpicking) and Zevran as dual-wield damage dealer. If I’m playing a Dalish elf (where I always level archery), it’s Zevran and Wynne for mage once I’ve levelled her damage spells appropriately. When I’m dual-wield rogue, it’s Leliana and Wynne.
15) If you could create a team of three non-companion characters to take with you on a quest, who would you choose? (Anyone in the game is fair game!)
Isabela, Duncan and … Irving if I’m playing a rogue, Daveth if mage. (I won’t pick Flemeth ‘cos that’s just … noooooo.
16) What is your favorite side quest? (Something not related to any of the main quests.)
I’m fond of the end quest of the ‘Favours for R and K’ that you get in the Gnawed Noble. Finding out that you’re in the middle of a father-son turf war is really interesting … and I think it’s one of the few times in game where you can tell someone, “Look, sort this out yourself”.
17) Do you have any particular routines that you stick to when you play? (Doing the quests in a specific order? Always buying/selling your gear at a certain merchant? Collecting every elfroot you see? Completing every single one of the side quests before the Landsmeet? Anything like that?)
Generally, I do the mages first, then Redcliffe, then Orzamarr (so I have Oghren for more of the game, even if the lower level makes the Deep Roads a bit harder), then breeze through the Dalish quest like it’s not there and on to the Landsmeet!
Everything else more or less depends on who or what I’m playing.
18) What moment of the game is most personally satisfying to you - is there something cathartic, something that makes you cheer, something that just feels right no matter what?
Telling that slaver in the Alienage where to stick it. There are other moments, admittedly, but that one … damn, it just feels good.
19) What brings you back to play DA:O again? What about this particular game makes it fun for you to play multiple times? What do you get out of each subsequent play?
Honestly, I don’t know. Because I make a lot of the same choices, it’s more akin to why I reread books over and over again - the sheer love of the story - with the potential for a new outcome if I want one.
20) If you were trying to convince someone else to play DA:O for the first time, what are the top three points you’d try to sell them on?
Depends on who I was convincing - different people have different selling points. I’d probably start with the multiple origins giving a different approach to the story depending on which you choose, thus providing a way to engage for nearly any mindset. From there I’d go on to the story itself - the epic tale of war and the rise of an ancient evil, while still having time for smaller, more personal affairs … all bundled up together in a way that doesn’t jar too much. I’d go on from there to the characters, probably; the detail and personality of it all.
Or, with other people, I’d just say, “Massive war story, great graphics and the ability to shoot fireballs at bad guys.
